Let's start with the basics. Who is "disabled" for Social Security purposes? In simple terms (we'll go into more detail later), "disability" is defined as an illness or injury that is expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death that keeps a person from being able to work. SSA sometimes tells people that they have to be out of work for 12 months before they can apply for benefits. That is NOT true. The illness or injury has to be expected to last for at least 12 months. In other words, these are individuals with long-term health problems, rather than short term medical problems. You can apply for benefits as soon as you are no longer working.
